環境問題が深刻化するなか，生態学は地球環境を救うための大きな役割と責任を負っています．私は30年以上にわたって主に鳥類を材料とした生態学の研究をおこなってきました．そして，私たち人類が存続できる基盤である生態系のメカニズムを解明し，環境の諸問題解決に貢献できる科学としての生態学の研究を進めることが目下の責任であると考えています．そしてそのために、森林や河川といった陸域の生態系に焦点をあて，上空から全体を俯瞰する鳥の視点からこれらの生態系の研究にあたっています．また，あたりまえの教養として，生態学の知識が日本人全体に共有されるよう努力を惜しまないつもりでいます．
